Make your house a more beautiful place this autumn by highlighting your autumn loving plants. Autumn is a difficult time for growing houseplants as the days get shorter and the air temperature drops. Some plants thrive with the cooler temperatures whilst others will drop their foliage and start to go dormant. Our following plant care tips will sort out any problems you may encounter and then we will provide a shortlist of the best plants for autumn.
So, when choosing new plants consider those that will transition through the tough seasons with ease and for your existing household foliage you need to start adjusting your care routine to keep them thriving.
1. Minimise your watering
Most houseplants do not need as much water in the winter as summer. Their need is less as they are going into dormancy and are not actively growing hence the risk of over watering is greater. It is important therefore that you start to reduce the amount you give them. Let the soil dry out more between watering. On average at The Pot Warehouse, we water most plants (there are always exceptions!) once a week during this period of time.
2. Move plants to increased light and away from drafts
As the days grow shorter the angle and amount of light entering windows changes meaning less light for some plants in certain locations. Consider moving plants to areas where more natural light is present. For example, near a north facing window.
3. Slow down then stop fertilising
Plants do not need fertilizer when in their dormancy period. This is one of the key autumn plant care tips that is often overlooked.
4. Bug check
Autumn is a time when plant bugs tend to thrive as there is more organic matter in the soil from falling foliage. Check soil and foliage and start treatment straight away if you find a problem. You can also preventatively spray your plant with neem oil like we do at The Pot Warehouse.
